What is a Wine IBC Tote Tank | Meet the Tank
Tanks for Wine® IBC tote tanks are intermediate bulk container type storage vessels uniquely designed and built for winery applications. The products are listed for sale under the Vino ProTank™ brand name. The Vino ProTank™ wine IBC tote follows the same tried, true, and trusted engineering of the commonly used poly caged tote but with several improvements and additions to specialize the IBC for winemaking scenarios.

The Vino ProTank™ wine IBC tote is available in 240 gallon and 300 gallon storage capacities. The inner container is made from USDA, FDA approved virgin high-density polyethylene certified for food grade uses. The winemaking IBC tote features a galvanized steel stacking frame, large diameter lid manway, integrated pallet base, drain valve, and sampling valve.

The Uses
The Vino ProTank™ is a wine making container engineered for the production of red wines, white wines, ciders, and spirits. The wine IBC container is ideal when seeking to make a “clean” tasting wine that preserves the natural flavor of the fruit. The scalability and ease of use of the wine IBC tote product is perfect for testing of new techniques, new vineyards, creating new beverages, and is perfect for new startups to long-established wineries, breweries, and distilleries.
The neutral quality of the polyethylene plastic IBC tote maintains a clean tasting wine without any flavors or impurities added to the beverage from the container as is common with wood barrels. This allows the end-resulting flavor of the beverage to be controlled and easily manipulated to achieve a desired flavor outcome through addition of staves, chips, spirals, blocks, etc.
Wine IBC Tote Uses: fermentation, aging, storage, stacking, transport, and distribution.

The Options
The exclusive Vino ProTank™ wine IBC totes are available in two different thicknesses to help you determine the optimal level of oxygen permeation for your cellar and based on your product. The two options are the “Aging” and “Storage” models.
The “Aging” Model
The “Aging” model has an IBC tote poly wall thickness designed to simulate container oxygen permeation that is favorable for red wines. The “Aging” model is also known as the “Maturation Weight” model and provides an oxygen permeation rate similar to that of a typical second year wine barrel.
The “Storage” Model
The “Storage” model has an IBC tote poly wall thickness designed to simulate oxygen permeation that is favorable for white wines, spirits, and cider products. The “Storage” model is also known as the “Heavyweight” model as the IBC tote has a thicker tank and is therefore heavier. This makes the “Storage” wine tote similar to that of a neutral wine barrel and provides about half the oxygen permeation rate of the “Aging” model.
The Advantages
The Vino ProTank™ is built like an intermediate bulk container with a few improvements for all the benefits and advantages of an IBC tote and more. Advantages include:
- Reliable Compatibility – USDA / FDA approved food grade high density polyethylene provides reliable compatibility with wines, ciders, and spirits.
- Residue Free – Modern catalyst technology has produced food grade polyolefins that are extremely stable and safe. Through trials, tests, research, and customer feedback, the Vino ProTank™ is proven residue free and will not taint the sensitive, valuable commodities inside.
- Flavor Control – The residue free, non-tainting nature of the polyethylene container allows full flavor control for the beverage product stored inside. The container does not contribute any flavors naturally on its own and the owner-operator can add any flavors to achieve the desired result.
- Long Lasting – High density polyethylene is a long lasting synthetic material capable of providing many years of service, especially when used with highly-compatible materials such as wine.
- Large Capacity – With 240 and 300 gallon options available, the Vino ProTank™ provides a large capacity excellent for full scale production, aging, vintage batches, experiments with new batches, techniques, or vineyards.
- Fully Draining – Unique, bevel wedge container bottom design slopes the Vino ProTank™ towards the drain valve, making the container fully draining so no product is lost. The draining design also improves cleanability.
- Cleanability – The large diameter manway, sloping bottom, and high density polyethylene construction provides superior cleanability and improves the ease of cleaning the IBC container product.
- Leak Proof – Gasketed, secure sealing closures, leak-proof, easy closing lid ensures the wine IBC is fully sealed and will not leak during operations, storage, or transport.
- Adjustable – Included stainless steel fermentation vent is adjustable to operate at different pressure settings to accommodate various fermentation techniques.
- Perfect Permeability – The unique, trade secret design and two tank thickness options provides the optimal amount of oxygen permeation perfect for winemaking fermentation or aging.
- Maneuverability – Built like an IBC tote, the Vino ProTank™ provides 4-way accessibility for maneuvering the wine tank to wherever needed via forklift truck or pallet jack.
- Cubical Shape – Cubical, box-like shape saves space and overall improves the wine tank’s ability to be organized, transported, stored, and stacked.
- Stackable – An integrated, pallet-style tank platform and rigid steel frame allows the Vino ProTank™ to be stacked one on top of the other, saving cellar space, and improving total volume per area. The tanks can be stacked 3 high, even when full.
Can Any Polyethylene Container Be Used for Winemaking?
Contrary to some thinking, not just any polyethylene container can be used for winemaking as not every container is created equal. Some polyethylene containers are food grade quality while others are non-food grade, some poly containers are ANSI/NSF 61 certified, and others are not. While these details certainly are important as food grade poly containers should be used, they are not the only points to consider when shopping poly containers for winemaking.
Oxygen permeation is a key point when considering the use of a polyethylene container for winemaking applications. For proper fermentation and aging, oxygen needs to be able to reach the wine inside. The Vino ProTank™ has been expertly engineered, crafted, and tested with this in mind. The result: two different tank thicknesses available to best suit individual winemaking techniques. For the Vino ProTank™, the “Aging” tank thickness is ideal for red wine products and the “Storage” thickness is ideal for white wine, cider, and spirits.
Summary | What This All Means for You
- Improved Space Efficiency: Two 300 gallon Vino ProTanks can replace ten 55 gallon barrels, and its stacking ability means vertical space can be maximized and effectively utilized.
- Versatile: Can serve as primary or secondary fermentation vessels, aging or storage tanks, test or experimental tanks.
- Oxygen Permeation: Oxygen can pass through the poly tank walls to simulate wine cellars and oak barrel aging.
- Hygienic: Food grade certified polyethylene and stainless steel materials are easier to clean than other containers and ensure the tank’s liquid products are protected.
- Flavor Retention: Retain flavor volatiles for more exact, complex, and/or unique flavor profiles.
- Flavor Control: Oak alternatives and flavor additive compatibility allows control of flavor outcomes.
- Consistency: The cleanability and neutral, “non-tainting” characteristics of the polyethylene material allows making consistent, high-quality products time after time.
- Sanitary: Built-in Tassalini sampling valve allows for sanitary tasting or inspections of liquids inside the wine IBC tote without the need to open the container, therefore protecting against product compromise and air exposure.
- Long Life and Economical: Polyethylene has a long useful life, can be extensively reused, and when compared to other methods, is often lower priced and can save a company up to 90% of their wine-aging costs.
- Recyclable: At product service life end, the wine IBC tote can be recycled, contributing to “going green” and environmental conservation efforts.
